Hardscape and masonry built to last, designed to perform

Stone paver patio with outdoor seating, East Bay hardscape by Wolf Renovations
150+
Hardscape
projects completed

A hardscape project transforms how you use your outdoor space. Done right, a paver patio, retaining wall, or outdoor kitchen becomes as functional and finished as any room inside the home. Done wrong, it cracks, settles, fails inspection, or simply looks out of place against the rest of the property.

Wolf Renovations handles every part of hardscape and masonry with our own crew. Material selection, site grading, base preparation, installation, and structural work are all managed under one contract with one project manager. Permits for retaining walls, outdoor structures, and gas lines are handled by us from start to finish.

We work on everything from straightforward paver patios to engineered retaining walls, complete outdoor kitchens, pool surrounds, and full outdoor living environments. Whatever the scope, the work is built to last and designed to look like it belongs there.

Paver Patios and Driveways
Porcelain and natural stone pavers for patios, driveways, walkways, and pool surrounds. Properly graded and base prepared for the long term.
Retaining Walls
Engineered to structural specification, not just visual preference. Permits and engineering coordination handled for walls requiring them.
Outdoor Kitchen Structures
Stone or stucco clad structures with built-in grills, refrigeration, and countertops. Gas line permits handled as part of the scope.
Fire Pits and Fireplaces
Gas or wood burning fire features in stacked stone or porcelain. Structural block core with decorative stone cladding.
Stacked Stone and Decorative Masonry
Natural ledger panels for garden walls, fireplace surrounds, outdoor kitchen facades, and accent features.
Permits for Structural Work
Wolf handles all permits for retaining walls, outdoor structures, and gas lines. You never deal with the building department directly.
Project scope

What does your hardscape project look like?

East Bay hardscape projects range from a straightforward patio installation to full outdoor living environments with multiple elements. Here are the three most common scopes.

Paver Installation

Patios, driveways, walkways, and pool surrounds in porcelain or natural stone

The most common starting point. A well-designed paver patio transforms how you use your outdoor space without major structural work.

  • Site grading and drainage assessment
  • Excavation and base preparation
  • Porcelain or natural stone paver installation
  • Sand set, mortar set, or concrete bed per application
  • Coping, caps, and step treads
  • Jointing and sealing as needed

Complete Outdoor Living

Full outdoor environments combining pavers, kitchen, fire features, and shade structures

The Bay Area climate makes a complete outdoor living space one of the most valuable investments you can make. Wolf coordinates all elements under one contract.

  • Paver patio as the foundation surface
  • Outdoor kitchen with grill and countertops
  • Fire pit or built-in fireplace
  • Pool surround in travertine or porcelain
  • Pergola or shade structure coordination
  • Gas line permits handled throughout
Materials

Porcelain and natural stone sourced for East Bay conditions

The right material depends on how the space will be used, how much sun it gets, and what look you are working toward. We assess your site before making a recommendation.

Premium porcelain pavers are our most recommended patio material for most East Bay projects. They replicate genuine natural stone through high definition technology, handle California's temperature swings well, and remain comfortable underfoot in summer heat — a practical advantage for pool surrounds and outdoor dining areas. Large format sizes create seamless indoor to outdoor transitions when paired with interior tile from the same collection.

For clients who want genuine natural stone, our supplier network carries travertine, granite, slate, quartzite, and limestone pavers in a range of colors and finishes. Travertine is our default pool surround recommendation — it stays cool underfoot in full sun and provides natural slip resistance when wet. Quartzite and granite are the most durable options for high traffic areas like driveways.

For stacked stone features — fireplace surrounds, outdoor kitchen facades, garden walls — we use natural ledger panels in travertine, slate, quartzite, marble, and porcelain stone look options. The panel format maintains genuine stone texture while making installation significantly more uniform than individual stone placement.

Premium porcelain pavers
High definition stone look, frost resistant, no sealing required, large format
Travertine pavers
Classic look, cool underfoot, excellent for pool surrounds and patios
Granite pavers
Extremely durable for driveways, walkways, and high use areas
Quartzite pavers
Natural veining and color variation for upscale patios and courtyards
Natural ledger stone panels
Travertine, slate, quartzite, marble, and porcelain stone look for decorative masonry

Why Wolf Renovations

What makes us different

  • In house masonry crew
Excavation, base prep, masonry, and installation are all Wolf employees. No subcontractors, no handoffs, one crew accountable for the entire project.
  • Structural walls built to spec
We build retaining walls to structural specification and coordinate engineering for walls that require stamped drawings. A wall that fails or lacks permits creates serious problems at resale.
  • 20 years of East Bay terrain experience
We know the hillside conditions in Orinda, Lafayette, Moraga, and Pleasant Hill. Local soil conditions, drainage patterns, and permit requirements are not guesswork for us.
  • Complete permit management
Retaining walls, outdoor structures, and gas lines all require permits in most East Bay jurisdictions. Wolf handles every application and inspection as part of the project scope.
  • CSLB licensed and fully insured
License #1132865. Every project is covered by general liability and workers compensation insurance. Verify us at cslb.ca.gov before hiring any contractor for structural work.

What East Bay homeowners say

★★★★★

"Wolf transformed our backyard completely. The paver patio is flawless, perfectly level, tight joints, exactly the pattern we discussed. They handled the retaining wall at the back of the property too, which required engineering drawings. The whole project was managed seamlessly from start to finish."

Michael and Diane S.

★★★★★

"We had a significant grade change in our backyard that needed a proper retaining wall before we could do anything else. Wolf engineered it correctly, pulled the permits, and built it right. The stacked stone finish looks incredible and we now have a usable flat yard behind it. Excellent work."

James T.
Lafayette, CA
★★★★★

"The outdoor kitchen they built is the centerpiece of our backyard now. Stone cladding, built-in grill, mini fridge, the whole thing. They coordinated the gas line permit, the patio pavers, and the pergola all under one contract so the design is completely cohesive. Our neighbors ask about it every time they come over."

Common questions

Hardscaping FAQs — East Bay

Hardscape costs vary significantly based on scope, material choice, site conditions, and whether structural work is involved. A straightforward paver patio costs substantially less than a project that also includes a retaining wall, outdoor kitchen, and fire feature. Wolf provides a complete line item proposal covering all materials, labor, and permit costs before you commit to anything. Contact us for a complimentary in-home site assessment and we will give you an honest range for your specific project.
For most East Bay patios, premium porcelain pavers are our first recommendation. They replicate natural stone with high fidelity, require zero maintenance, handle the temperature swings the region sees, and are available in large format sizes that create a seamless look. For pool surrounds specifically, travertine remains our standard recommendation because it stays cooler underfoot in direct sun than porcelain and provides natural slip resistance when wet. For clients who want genuine natural stone, quartzite and granite are the most durable long term options.
In most East Bay jurisdictions, retaining walls over four feet in height measured from the bottom of the footing require a building permit and engineered drawings stamped by a licensed structural engineer. Some cities have lower thresholds. Walls that retain soil adjacent to a structure, driveway, or property line may require permits regardless of height. Wolf evaluates your specific wall at the site visit and handles all permits, engineering coordination, and inspections as part of the project scope. Building a retaining wall without required permits creates problems at resale and refinancing.
Yes. Wolf builds complete outdoor kitchen structures with stone or stucco cladding, built-in grill installations, refrigeration, and countertop surfaces. Outdoor kitchens with gas lines require permits, which Wolf handles. We coordinate the patio pavers, kitchen structure, and any gas work under one contract so the design and construction are consistent throughout.
